Where our data comes from

Branch locations, maps, age rules and prices each come from a different place. Here’s every source and its license.

Many branch locations come from OpenStreetMap, the free map of the world built by volunteers. OpenStreetMap copyright and license

The same credit appears on every map on this site and in the app. Map tiles come from OpenFreeMap (built from OpenStreetMap data) or, when configured, Mapbox.

The ODbL and our database

OpenStreetMap data is available under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0. The ODbL lets anyone use the data, as long as they credit OpenStreetMap and share any database derived from it under the same license.

  • Every branch we derive from OpenStreetMap lives in its own table, separate from our other records. We never copy OpenStreetMap coordinates or addresses into our own branch records.
  • When one of our records is the same place as an OpenStreetMap branch, we store only a link between the two, and search shows a single card.
  • On request, we’ll provide the OpenStreetMap-derived branch table under the ODbL. Ask through Report a branch and leave an e-mail address.

How branch data is updated

Once a week we import car-rental and car-sharing locations in the United States from OpenStreetMap through the public Overpass API. The importer identifies itself with a contact address, keeps its request rate low and caches results, as the OpenStreetMap usage policies ask. A branch that disappears from three imports in a row goes to a person for review before it leaves search.

Age rules and fees

Minimum ages, young-driver fees, car-class limits and waivers (like AAA or USAA programs) come from each rental company’s own policy pages. Every rule stores the page it came from and the date someone checked it. When a fee is estimated from a policy page rather than quoted live, we label it “Estimate — from the company’s policy page, verify at booking” and link the source.

Live prices

Live prices come only from partners that approved us — never from scraping a rental company or aggregator website or app. We keep each partner’s prices only as long as that partner allows, then delete them. See How we make money.

Something wrong?

If a branch is missing, has the wrong address or hours, or has closed, report it. A person reviews every report. You can also fix the place on OpenStreetMap itself — our next weekly import will pick it up.
